How to Clean a Whiteboard

There are two kinds of whiteboard; the one that needs liquid cleaner like alcohol and the one that should be cleaned by dry abrasion. Sometimes when marks have been left on for a long time they will not come off simply by using a dry cloth. It is possible to use a marker to draw over those marks and then clean them in the normal way, but it does take up a lot of marker ink, so here are a few more suggestions for cleaning a dry whiteboard.

• Use paper towel with a little hand sanitizer on it and scrub at those marks. They will come off without harming the surface of the whiteboard. You can use a tissue, but it is not as strong and will end up shredded. Once the whiteboard is clean, use another paper towel dampened with water to clean off the hand sanitizer.
• Use a marker as above, but make sure it is a dark one, as that will work best.
• An alcohol wipe will also do the trick.
• Methylated spirits on a paper towel will also get off those marks.
• Hairspray is another option to clean a whiteboard that needs a dry cleaner.
• A vinegar and water mixture will often remove old marker.
• Toothpaste is another product that is often used to clean a whiteboard, but some is slightly abrasive.
• Car wax or neutral (no colour) shoe polish have also been used with some success.

When looking to clean your dry whiteboard, be sure not to use anything that is abrasive as the surface will become scratched and this will make it harder or even impossible to clean the next time. Once the whiteboard has been cleaned it should be conditioned to protect the surface. This can be done by wiping it over with mineral oil – baby oil is fine, or a shampoo and conditioner combination.
