A Trip Through the Universe
I would like to tell you about the first time I had a visit from a Guardian Angel. It was something extraordinary that made a lasting impression on me for the rest of my life. But before I can tell you about that, I need to give you some background information so that you will understand what brought on this angelic visit.
I was twenty-two years old, living in San Francisco, having moved up there from Los Angeles a few months earlier. Not long afterward, I ran into big trouble with my teeth. I had a mouthful of cavities, a number of which needed root canal work. Because of the exorbitant cost, the dentist decided it would be simply cheaper to pull out numerous molars from both my upper and lower jaws. I was devastated.
I called my parents back in Chicago and told them I needed $500.00 as a downpayment before the dentist would start working. This was back in the 1960s, when $500.00 was probably equivalent to today’s $6,000.00 or $7,000.00 in purchasing power. My parents, who were not very well off, did not have the money. I fell into a very depressed state.
At that time, I was working for a small law firm. On Fridays, the staff would leave about two or three o’clock for the weekend, and I was left alone to answer the phones, finish my work, and lock up the offices at five o’clock.
On this particular Friday, everyone left early, as usual. The office was quiet, and because I was so depressed over my situation, I started crying, giving full throttle to my feelings of hopelessness and fear.
After a few minutes of such bawling, an extraordinarily peaceful feeling descended over me while, at the same time, I felt this pressure pushing down on my shoulders. In another moment, I felt myself out in the universe, among all the galaxies and clusters of stars, although I was still seated at my desk. But in my mind, it felt as if I was traveling through space, looking at the millions and millions of stars lighting up the darkness. Some presence was informing me that there was absolutely nothing out of order in the entire universe; that every star, every planet was accounted for, even every speck of dust. It was all accounted for. There are no accidents, no coincidences; everything is in its rightful place exactly as it is.
And while this message was coming through, a fantastic feeling of perfect faith and trust in the order of life took hold, and I felt utter peace and bliss. I just knew everything was all right; that it was all perfect.
This intense experience of faith and bliss held on for quite a while, as the pressure on my shoulders grew increasingly stronger. The upper part of my body was now being pushed downward toward the desk. This pressure never hurt; however, it soon became so intense that I could not tolerate it any further. I shook myself, mind and body, thus shaking off the entire experience. Afterward I sat there dazed for a time, trying to grasp the meaning of what had just transpired.
Meanwhile, without my knowing, my father, back in Chicago, approached my cousin, Irv, asking to borrow the $500.00. We never had much contact with that particular cousin or that side of the family. Irv was about fifteen years older than me, and quite wealthy.
The long and short of it is that he did lend my father the money. He already was planning to fly out to Los Angeles in any event. And so, about two weeks after my angelic visit, he handed my sister a check for me in the sum of $500, plus he gave her some money for a weekend up in San Francisco. Right after that, my dental work began.
Looking back after all these years, I still cherish the connection between that angelic visit and those funds coming through.
