kitchen electrical outlet problem?

i put a new kitchen outlet in today…old one wasnt working…i put blk to brass..white and ground on other side…the blk had juice to it…but when i plugged in a few things nothing works..my white wire has no juice..i used a pen tester i have no reader..the 2nd one i put in i broke off the 2 tabs in middle and still no results..what can i try next? thanks to all who respond..breakers are fine..this is an apartment..comming from the outlet box are just blk,white and ground no other wires
ok..today i looked in the other outlets nearby and found loose wires in one of them..i went ahead and put a new outlet in and now only the bottom plug works not the top one in the one i was having trouble with..i put another new plug in and broke the tabs off..this completly did not work there was no power…what can i do now?

most likely whatever kept the old receptacle from working is keeping this one from working also…black to brass white to silver and ground to green is the way it should be connected…this plug in probably gets it power and neutral from the outlet on either side of it ….what you need to do is turn power off and check all the connection in each outlet that is just before or after this outlet….make sure all connections and wirenuts are tight at all three outlets….turn power on and see if this fixes the problem…if not call an electrician..do not break off the tabs..this will keep one half of the outlet from havng any power
