Examining the Pros and Cons of Depression Meds

Depression is a serious mental health condition and that is why it is important to treat the problem. There are a number of ways to treat the condition and it would seem depression meds are the most common. Depression meds are prescription drugs prescribed by a psychiatrist with the intention of alleviating the various problems associated with the condition. There are numerous different types of meds for treating depression. None are really better than the other. However, different people will experience different results from using different prescriptions. Some of the most common prescribed antidepressants include:

Wellbutrin: This is an anti-depressant common prescribed to those that suffer from bipolar disorder. Surprisingly, this drug was originally intended as a means of curbing smoking but it has proven to deliver significant results in the realm of depressive disorders.

Effexor: This antidepressant is prescribed for a number of different depressive disorders. However, it has been shown that higher dosages of Effexor are required in order for it to deliver solid results. For some patients, this is acceptable as long as the results are the desired ones.

Prozac: With the release of the book PROZAC NATION, this particular prescription has become somewhat notable in popular culture. Unfortunately, the image of Prozac is that of a symbol of the over-abuse of prescription medication. In the real world though, Prozac has proven to be very helpful in terms of its ability to alleviate common depressive disorders.

Paxel: Paxel has made somewhat of a unique impression in the world of anti-depressants thanks to a very low key advertising campaign. The pharmaceutical company that promoted Paxel produced a series of commercials stressing the relaxing and calming effects of the drug. This led to a great deal of interest in Paxel since many took these commercials to heart assuming that drug could reduce the anxiety component depressive disorders often come with.

Zoloft: This prescription has proven popular because it not only can reduce depressed moods, it can also alleviate problems with social anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, and behavioral problems. Although not a new drug, the popularity of this drug only peaked in recent years.

While there are a number of benefits found with these depression meds, there are also risks associated with using them. Liver and kidney damage can occur. Gastrointestinal bleeding has been reported in some cases. Excessive weight gain and loss have occurred among certain patients. And, in some extreme cases, the use of depression meds actually worsened the condition to the point that suicide was the result. As such, one needs to understand that these drugs are not a panacea that can eliminate all problems.

Those wishing to avoid taking prescription depression meds should look into the potential for help that natural medications offer. Supplements such as St. John’s Wort and Passion Flower Extract have proven to be quite successful in treating the condition. So, if you have concerns regarding using the prescription drugs, it would be wise to look into the availability of natural meds for treating depression.
