The Story Of The IBM Selectric Typewriter
The ibm selectric typewriter, introduced in 1961, is the electric typewriter that brought an evolution in the field of electronic typewriter. It is occasionally called the IBM Golfball typewriter. For the first time, different fonts could be used in the same writing with the help of a pivoting typeball that replaced the typebars used in the older versions. The writings were regular in size. With it was started the era of desktop publishing. An updated version, Selectric II was into market a few years later.
The later versions came with elective pitch and an in-built correction tape. Any typist with minimum of expertise can produce a classy document. The speed increased (14.8characters/sec) and so did its reliability. In place of Teletypes, the IBM typewriters were later used as terminals for computers.
With the new key lockout feature, the irregularities regarding a false stroke on keys were nullified. Even if multiple keys were pressed, it would have produced the same effect. These made some typists to think that some kind of storage area was present inside the IBM typewriters.
There were some major advantages of the Selectric II over the Selectric I such as- a) Selectric II had square edges unlike the circular one in its earlier version, b) there was provision for auto-correction, c) presence of livers in Selectric II helped the characters to get lifted half a space to their left and the platen was able to move freely and come back to the same vertical line again.
The one big similarity among them was their use of same type balls. These IBM typewriters of both the varieties were found in the market at an affordable price in various colors.
In 1980s, IBM launched the Selectric III typewriters and various other versions. But these were not the classical typewriters. This model did not gain much fame like its forefathers did.
