A week-end in Palma de Mallorca
- Where to stay
Check out, or should I say check into, the Hotel Convent de la Missió. With its Turkish bath and excellent Simply Fosh restaurant this is just one of handful of city hotels that were once grand townhouses or Moorish palaces.
Hotel Convent de la Missió, *C/. de La Missio, Tel: 971 227 347, www.conventdelamissio.com. The Maricel in Cas Catalá was one of Mallorca’s first hotels. Errol Flynn and Ava Gardner enjoyed the frontline position and fine interiors. Hotel Maricel, *C/. de Andratx, No. 11, Cas Catalá, Calvià, Tel: 971 707 744, www.designhotels.com Puro Oasis Urbano Hotel, Mallorca’s capital has a new designer hotel. The Puro, a restored city palace, has a roof deck with plunge pool. The Opio Bar and Restaurant offers Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. Puro Hotel, *C/. Montenegro 12, Palma, Tel: 971 425 450, www.purohotel.com
- Friday Night
La Lonja (the old part of Palma de Mallorca) is a great area to explore when you arrive in Palma. There are lots of bars, restaurants and night clubs. Find your favourite from our recommendations. Ribello, C/. Apuntadores, 11, Tel: 600 440 787 for teh best Italian food in Palma. Neo Cultural, C/ Boteria 8, Tel: 971 728 994 for fantastic tapas, dinner and cocktails. La Bóveda, C/. Marina Boteria 3, Tel: 971 71 48 63 offers traditional tapas. For amazing cocktails: Nicolas Cocktail Bar, Plaza de Marcado, Palma (it is where the trendy locals hang-out.)
- Saturday
Your Saturday morning in Palma is easily kept busy with a little, if not a lot, of retail therapy. Shoeaholics and lovers of all things leather will be in seventh heaven! Stroll along Avda. Jaime III for designer goods and well-known brands. Stop for a traditional Mallorca breakfast of coffee and ensáimada (pastry) at one of the bars in Plaça Juan Carlos I and you’ll be with the in crowd. Head off into the nearby narrow streets of Can Brondo/Sant Nicolau and enjoy the specialist shops and and designer boutiques. Jaime II has some of the city’s oldest shops. From Plaça Major explore C/. San Miguel and Via Sindicat. Look for Capuccino’s Grand Café on San Miguel – one of the most beautiful places to drink coffee in the city. Follow Via Sindicat and you’ll reach the Avenidas.
- Santa Catalina Market
If you want to soak-up the Mallorcan lifestyle then a visit to the Santa Catalina Market is highly recommended. Stroll through the aisles and observe the locals and (many of the expat community) doing their week bargaining for the best fruit and vegetables.
Santa Catalina Market, *C/.Annibal, Santa Catalina
- Saturday Lunch
As you are going to be in this area then reserve a table in Fabrica 23 which is without doubt one of the best places in the city for lunch. It is not just the fabulous food but also the atmosphere. Enjoy! Advance booking highly recommended. Fabrica 23, *C/. Cotoner 42-44, Tel: 971 453 125.
- Saturday Afternoon
If you can resist a siesta then it is well worth the effort to go to Es Baluard, Palma’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has been built inside an ancient fortress known as the bastion of Saint Peter. 20th-21st century modern art combined with modern architecture and superb views of the city and sea from wall-top walkways.
Es Baluard, Plaça Porta de Santa Catalina, Palma, Tel. 971 908 200, www.esbaluard.org.
- Saturday Night Dinner
A new hotspot is Rotana Restaurant an interesting offering of authentic Lebanese cuisine. The moody lighting creates the perfect atmosphere for a romantic dinner and your maitre will make you feel at home.
Rotana Restaurant *C/. San Magin 58, Santa Catalina, Palma de Mallorca Tel: 971 286 078
- Sundays
Sundays are for relaxation here in Mallorca. So buy your favourite papers (international press available from most of the city’s kiosks), head to El Molinar/Portixol area, a great place to take a stroll along the waterfront, and when you’re finished you can relax over a leisurely lunch. Try Iceberg Bistro one of the best scandanavian tapas restaurants & ice-cream parlours in Palma or Portixol Hotel which has a beautiful terrace overlooking the small marina of Portixol.
Iceberg Bistro, *C/. Vicari Joaquim Fuster 83, El Molinar Tel: 971 244 062
Portixol Hotel, *C/. Sirena 27 Tel: 971 271 800
- Sunday afternoon
After lunch hop on the Palma Sightseeing bus to Bellver Castle for the History of the City Museum and the Despuig Sculpture Collection. A good museum and excellent views of the Bay of Palma for less than 2 euros.
Bellver Castle, Camillo José Cela, s/n, Palma de Mallorca Tel: 971 730 657)
- Sunday Night
Here’s your chance to leave the city and head southwest to the glamorous Puerto Portals (just 10 minutes in a taxi). This is where island residents mingle with visiting celebrities and tourists. There’s a great selection of restaurants, pizzerias and bistros here. And the good thing about it? There’s a menu to suit all budgets
Palma de Mallorca offers art, shopping, culture, great food and excellent after dark entertainment. If you are planning a city break, make it a long weekend in Palma de Mallorca.
